Few suburbs near us have a brick riverfront and a ring of newer subdivisions in one city. St. Charles does. We cover it from our Broadhead Lane base, about 35 minutes away in normal traffic, so a visit here is a real drive and the first call is where we sort out what the system is doing.
Main Street brick and post-1970s subdivisions: two kinds of HVAC problem
St. Charles counted 31,744 housing units at the 2020 census, according to the census. The Riverfront and Main Street area sits inside the St. Charles Historic District, where old masonry buildings have thick walls, few chases and little space for new ductwork.
The same article describes rapid new home construction and population growth since the late 1970s. Those streets are mostly forced-air: a furnace in a basement or garage, a coil on top and a condenser in the side yard. Systems from the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions now sit in the 15-20 year range contractors cite for replacement.

Two building booms, the 1960s and the 1980s, behind the subdivisions
St. Charles was founded around 1769, incorporated in 1809 and served as Missouri's first state capital from 1821 to 1826. Most of the houses around it came much later. Census counts show the city growing from 21,189 residents in 1960 to 31,834 in 1970, then from 37,379 in 1980 to 54,555 in 1990.
Those two jumps, 50 percent and 46 percent, left many houses 35 to 65 years old. The first thing to learn on a call is the age of the current unit, because the original equipment from a 1960s or 1980s house was almost certainly replaced long ago.
Which St. Charles heating and cooling jobs come up most?
These are the service pages that fit the housing here.

Ductless Mini Split Installation
Brick buildings in the Main Street historic district rarely have room for new duct runs, so ductless is often the practical way to add cooling.

Furnace Replacement
Furnaces installed in the subdivisions that grew up after the late 1970s are reaching the 15-20 year range contractors cite for replacement, and a replacement quote deserves a repair estimate beside it.

AC Repair
Long humid stretches in the Missouri River valley keep condensers running for hours, which wears capacitors and contactors on older units, and a unit past fifteen years deserves a repair quote read beside a replacement quote.

Heat Pump Installation
Homes on Ameren Missouri electric can check a heat pump against Ameren's 2026 rebate chart, which pays $2,000 per qualifying air-source system through a participating contractor and ends December 31.

AC Replacement
The city grew 46 percent in the 1980s, from 37,379 residents to 54,555, so the original condensers in those homes are long gone and many second units are now past fifteen years.

Commercial HVAC Maintenance
Main Street shops stay busy through the Christmas Traditions season, from the day after Thanksgiving to the Saturday after Christmas, so seasonal maintenance belongs in October, not mid-December.

Furnace Maintenance
January nights average about 22°F in St. Charles and the record low is minus 25°F, so a burner, blower and flue check is worth doing before the first hard freeze.

Call, describe the symptom and ask where the schedule stands. Founder Kenan Bruce Martz started the company in 2010 because he disliked the hard-sell pitches in the trade. A technician diagnoses first, explains the problem in plain language, and gives you a clear, upfront quote before work begins.

Main Street shops and the Christmas Traditions season
The St. Charles Historic District fills with visitors during Christmas Traditions, which runs from the day after Thanksgiving through the Saturday after Christmas. A shop on Main Street has its best window for a heating check or a planned replacement in October and early November.
Kenan Corporation does light commercial HVAC. A fall call lets us diagnose a tired unit before the crowds arrive, and we offer same-day service when the schedule allows.
Licenses, permits and utilities around Zumbehl, Highway 94 and Main Street
The City of St. Charles licenses HVAC contractors through Community Development, and new applicants must show proof of testing such as a St. Charles County license or an ICC exam, according to the city's licensing page. The county runs its own mechanical license with Class A and Class B exams. Ask any contractor, including us, for the license number. Permit questions go to Community Development at 636-949-3222, and the written quote should say who pulls the permit.
Most homes buy electricity from Ameren Missouri and gas from Spire, though Spire's own page says to confirm service by address. Ameren's 2026 chart pays $2,000 per system for qualifying air-source heat pumps through a participating contractor, and only Ameren customers qualify. Read the heat pump installation page before choosing, and see furnace replacement if your unit is past 15 years.
What the St. Charles licensing page asks of a contractor
The city runs its license year from July 1 to June 30. Its licensing page lists a $10,000 compliance bond, liability insurance of $500,000 or more with the city as certificate holder, and the most recent St. Charles County personal property tax receipt. It warns that a lapsed bond or policy can suspend a license and delay permits or inspections.
That page carries 2025 dates, so confirm current terms with Community Development at 636-949-3227 before relying on them.

Learn more →Heating and Cooling in St. Charles: common questions
Do you travel to St. Charles, or is it too far?
We do come to St. Charles. The drive is about 35 minutes from our base near Spanish Lake in normal traffic, over the Missouri River, so call first and tell us what the system is doing. We are open 24 hours, and we offer same-day service when the schedule allows.
Can an old brick building in the historic district get air conditioning without ducts?
Often yes. A ductless mini-split needs only a refrigerant line set and a small drain through an exterior wall, which suits masonry buildings on Main Street where chases are scarce. A load calculation should decide the number of indoor heads before anyone sizes equipment.
Who licenses HVAC work in St. Charles, MO?
Missouri has no statewide HVAC license, so the city and county do it. St. Charles licenses HVAC contractors through its Community Development office, and St. Charles County issues its own mechanical license. Ask any contractor for the license number, and call Community Development to confirm it.

The best in the business!!! So nice, great communication, quick and straight to the point. I can’t recommend Kenan enough!!!
Kenna did an amazing job! I had another company come out and told me I needed a new furnace because my heat was not coming on. Previous company said could be the motor/fan and that would cost $650, which I was ok with. They didn’t check any parts, but was ready to say I should just get a new heating and cooling unit. I knew my neighbor had service done by Kenyan and said he did a great job. He came out and found it was a capacitor that was causing the issue and fixed it. He is awesome and definitely if I need help again, he will be called and I will use his services!
